My Unconventional Journey into Project Management

Updated: Sep 17, 2023

When I started to investigate project management some years ago, I didn't quite know where it would lead me. So, I did what any curious soul would do – I reached out to friends in the field to get their insights and find out if I had what it takes to be a Project Manager.

To my surprise, the response was overwhelmingly positive. Many of them pointed out that I was already performing a Project Manager's role.

At the time, I held the position of Operational Director at an educational facility and had recently completed a master's level diploma in teaching.

"Isn't organising your study around a demanding work and home life a form of project management?" they asked.

I was unconvinced.

So I took a bold move and relocated from Spain to England where I hoped to embark on my project management journey.

Imagine my shock when, through the wizardry of LinkedIn, Russell Moore, a former manager I hadn't seen in 16 years who was, at that time Head of Resourcing at Aspira, a prominent project management consultancy, reached out to me. He asked if I could help him out for a few months using my experience from my first career, as recruiter.

Fast forward 5 years, numerous projects, PM qualifications; Diploma of Project Management, CaPM, Scrum Master, Prince2, and the illustrious PMP. My journey saw me making two international moves, to Cork and then Lisbon, where I spearheaded the start up launch of the Nearshore business.

And now, I'm thrilled to announce that I'm a PMI Authorised Training Provider (ATP) Instructor, offering PMP exam preparation courses to people on the same exciting journey I once embarked upon.

As I continued to gather experience in project management, I see now there was an unexpected twist – my teaching qualifications became my agile track back into the classroom. (See what I did there?)

I've recently embarked on a freelance career as a PM Consultant and Trainer. My goal is simple – to share my project management experience and wisdom with other companies venturing on the startup path or match with PMP training providers in search of talent.
